Life Doesn't Always Have Sheltered Spans

Image
Saturday, March 12, 2016 For those of you that have read about my rambling about Indiana, you know one of my favorite destinations are Covered Bridges. While in the Hoosier State I did a lot of visiting and research about the spans and the men who built them. I was working on a documentary about the builders, and I can remember one day that I was trying to think of other ways to say Covered Bridges. Sheltered Spans is what I came up with, I even liked the alliteration. So today I set out on The Black Pearl to find my first Covered Bridge in North Carolina. I had really thought visiting these old passes were gone from my riding days. I didn't think North Carolina needed them since the weather conditions are not so harsh. The weathering of the wooden structures is why they were covered in the first place. So after my favorite riding partner, Kasey, took this photo, we hit the road! We hot the road, heading north on 200, and quickly left the town of Locust, North Carolina. ...

You Know It Is Good Place to Eat When...

Sunday, June 14th, 2009 Well, I have been wanting to ride, but just had not made an opportunity for a bit. Well, Al, the vice president of the Cruiser Club had called, and wanted to ride this weekend. He had found a new place to ride to and get a bite to eat, and he was dying to lead me there. I polished up the bike a bit, and waited for Al to roll up the driveway. I need gas, and that would be our first stop. We both fueled up at the Thornton's. Al asked about taking 465 to I-65 down south. I had to ask, he seemed to want to get there fast, if he was really that hungry. He dislikes the super slab as most of the riders I motorcycle. We would have started out on 465, but Al missed the turn, and in true Cruiser Club fashion, we made a U-Turn. It happens to the best of us, trust me. Well, we got on 465, and rounded the circle city, and made our way to I-65. We began heading south, past Greenwood, and then Franklin, Indiana. It was all that a ride on the highway can be, mind ...

Riding to Save the Ta-Ta's

Friday, May 15th, 2009 First off, I want to let you know that I have ridden since my last post, but it was just to go from Kasey's House back to my own, and run to Kroger for groceries. Since this is my 251st Post, I wanted to be more than just a regular trip. So, the main part of this issue will be about a very special ride. You see, last year in the summer, a woman bought a motorcycle in Florida. Trouble was, she lived in Vancouver, BC. At first, like others who had bought a bike from a distance, that she would just have it shipped. But this woman was looking for adventure, so she flew to Florida, and rode the motorcycle back homes 5,000 miles. After posting her intent on the Women Who Ride forum, she found that she would not make the journey alone. Other Women on the forum rode with her. Joining the dance across the country, they formed a supportive, conga line. That was the summer of 2008, and this is 2009. That woman, Flo Fuhr, realized she missed Alabama on her journ...

Last Saturday of the Year

Saturday, December 30, 2006 Here it is the last Saturday of 2006. The sun slowly came out all day long, and by the afternoon, it was time to go for a ride. I started out heading east on Tenth Street until I go to the little town of Cumberland. I went south on Muesing Street and jogged on US 40, to continue south. Muesing Street starts with two ninety degree turns, the first is a right hander , the second a lefty. I stretch of new pavement runs along the center of the road, making it uneven, about an inch difference. I came into the second turn just a little hot, but leaned on the handlebar to counter-steer. The bike healed over, and the floorboard folded up, pinching my foot. Suddenly I heard a load scrapping sound, and the bike was not going over an further. I glanced down, and could see the highway bar dragging on the raised pavement. I was nearly through the corner, so I throttled up, and the bike popped upright as I exited the corner. The was a first!! I could see chro...
