Riding for the Fallen

Sunday, September 9th, 2012

So after a summer of riding in temperatures in the triple digits, rain that could be seen on a microscope, spring arrived in Central Indiana at the end of August and beginning of September. After a Friday Night monsoon, the numbers dropped, and we were heading out at 9am on this 60 degree morning.

Kasey and I headed through town, passing the Fair on the Square, and on to the Kroger on US 36 where it meets the old US 36. Several bikes dotted the landscape of the parking lots for Kroger, McDonald's and the gas station. A group of four of them looked the people we were meeting.

I passed them in the parking lot and rode on over to fuel up The Pearl. We returned and met the group. Anna, who we had ridden with before, Eric from the Clinton, Indiana Cruiser Club, plus Dave, Doug and Rochelle, new people we were just meeting today.

After meeting, sharing stories, and waiting for other, we headed up to the Hendricks County Fairgrounds. After a couple of loops, we found where we were supposed to enter the place. We lined up behind about two dozen bikes, and watched as about 180 more two wheel vehicles line up behind us.

Today's ride was to raise money for the fallen, police officers, firefighters, and others in the emergency services.

We took off rounding around the Fairgrounds, and into the country of Hendricks County. We took a left, to head west north of Danville at the Longstreet Playhouse. We eventually made our way to 136, and headed to Ladoga, Indiana.

US 231 would make our way south into Greencastle, Indiana, and on into Cloverdale and a stop at Casey's Food and Fuel. It was the same stop we had along the Sheltering Wings Ride.

After a long wait, and one of the riders close to us forcing the issue, we left for the second shorter leg. It was nearly the time we were supposed to be back at the Fairgrounds.

We continued on US 231 to SR 42. We then headed east along this route to Hazelwood Road, which took us north. Next was a turn to the east, and along US 40, The National Road. We passed south of Cartersburg, and then turned south on Miles Road, the same Road I use a lot to get to I 70, on my way to Columbus, or into Indy.

This road would get us on our way to the State Police Training Ground. Here we would tour around the Emergency Vehicle Course. It was interesting to see all the skid marks, and the cars they use, looked as thought they have seen better days.

After a lap, we made our way back into Plainfield, onto US 40, heading West this time to Cartersburg Road. We went north, and it was hard to hold The Pearl back as it is very comfortable on this stretch of asphalt. Before getting into Danville, we headed north, and made our way across US 36 and back to the Fairgrounds.

It was a great day, sun dipped in and out of clouds, and the mercury rose into the low and mid 70's.
