Last Saturday of the Year

Saturday, December 30, 2006

Here it is the last Saturday of 2006. The sun slowly came out all day long, and by the afternoon, it was time to go for a ride. I started out heading east on Tenth Street until I go to the little town of Cumberland. I went south on Muesing Street and jogged on US 40, to continue south.

Muesing Street starts with two ninety degree turns, the first is a right hander, the second a lefty. I stretch of new pavement runs along the center of the road, making it uneven, about an inch difference. I came into the second turn just a little hot, but leaned on the handlebar to counter-steer. The bike healed over, and the floorboard folded up, pinching my foot. Suddenly I heard a load scrapping sound, and the bike was not going over an further. I glanced down, and could see the highway bar dragging on the raised pavement. I was nearly through the corner, so I throttled up, and the bike popped upright as I exited the corner. The was a first!! I could see chrome bubbled up from the bar. That is what it is there for, however.

So I continued south through the country road, taking it a little slower into the curves. At Prospect, I had to jog, so I could continue south to US 52.

Brookville Road, or US 52, goes south and east, eventually to the Ohio River near Cincinnati. I would only be taking it to SR 9. Past New Palestine, I would turn north, and ride into Greenfield.

At US 40, I turned west, past the James Whitcomb Riley Museum and Home, and continued to Fortville Road. I have been on Fortville Road before, and it is a smooth road with some good curves, and cool views. It would meander me north to SR 234, which I took west.

SR 234 took my west to SR 67/SR 36, which I took south and west back into the circle city. This area goes from a small town, into suburbia. Store after store, strip center after strip center. I continued through the traffic until Shadeland Avenue. As I headed south, I stopped off at a liquor Store to get some beer for New Year's Eve. Can't buy on Sunday, so everyone had to stock up a day early, probably cause more to drink early!!

Another stop along Shadeland was at First Indiana Bank to make a deposit. Then I continued to Tenth Street, and home.

According to the odometer on the bike, I rode about 12,000 miles in 2006. However, I have a feeling the odometer is not entirely accurate. Early, at the 2000 mile mark on the Carlsbad Trip, my odometer had only recorded about 1700, miles, about a 15 percent difference. That puts the years riding closer to 14,000, which sound more like it to me. I plane to reset the GPS, and keep a chart on the mileage difference.

See You All From the Saddle in 2007!!
