Getting Back Out There

Image
Saturday, May 23, 2015 When you are trying to immerse yourself back into something, you always want to start out doing it right. I feel like my hiatus from motorcycling actually lasted two years. I rode right up until we left for Costa Rica, and I have a few thousand miles since we have come back, but in the grand scheme of things, that is just a run for breakfast. So 2015 will be when I am really getting back into things. This nice day ride starts off a familiar spot, the gas station. We are in Danville, Indiana, where US 36 meets SR 39. From there, we would head south out of town, jogging over to Cartersburg Road. Smooth, curvy pavement greets us, and since I have been on stretch a number of times, it is a good warm up. After short stint on US 40, The National Road, we head south on Miles Drive, which bends to the east. At a traffic circle, we head south into Mooresville, eventually joining up with SR 267 which we follow through town to SR 144. A lot of this route is familia...

Back to Old Friends

Image
Saturday, May 2nd, 2015 Google Map of this Ride I really wanted to be pulling out of Danville around ten in the morning, but Mother Nature and my favorite riding partner, Kasey, were not cooperating. The two hours, we left at noon, allowed the temperature to rise about 20 degrees. That swing was enough of a difference for me not to complain. We didn't get much of a riding season last year, to busy settling back in after the year in Costa Rica. Then there was that year, and the partial year before the adventure. I felt like a rookie rider, and I was excited as one to get back in the saddle. The trip is one I have been on, and wrote about on here. What a great way to back to riding than to visit some old friends, the roads, a covered bridge, a mill, and the people that own it. We headed out of Danville by taking Mill Street to head south on Mackey Road. The first stop, we turned right, and began our track west. Lincoln Street divides the high school and one of the elementary ...

Scrubbing in a New Tire

Image
Tuesday, March 31, 2015 This ride story actually starts a few days before the actual riding. Since last fall, I needed a new front tire on The Black Pearl. No point in letting new rubber sit in the garage and not gripping the road. So a week or so ago, I ordered new front tire. Next is to get it mounted, and my brother had the tools to do it, and had changed the tires on his bike. So Kasey and I drove up to Lafayette to my brother's house with the old tire on the rim, and the brand new tire. The four of us chatted for a bit, and then Kevin and I headed out to start changing the tire. All of his tools are of the manual variety, so it made it hard get the old tire off the rim. That and the factors that is was cold, and had been on the rim longer than usual. Once we got the bead broken, we were able to get it popped off the rim. Next was getting the new cold tire on the rim. I did a bit of cleaning, and we started the process. We felt like we were putting a 17 inch tire on a...

Show Me Your Colors, Hendricks County!

Image
Friday, October 17th, 2014 This will a blog post with quite a difference, you can ride along with me!! I decided to go out and find some of the best scenic roads in Hendricks County, and capture it using my GoPro Camera. My favorite riding partner, Kasey, and I started out on the south edge of Danville, Indiana, on Cartersburg Road. This is a long time favorite road of mine. It has always had smooth pavement and good mix of curves. We veered off of Cartersburg at County Road 350 South, and headed east to another favorite road, Vestal Road. We picked the road just north of the Plainfield Recreation and Aquatic Center. Vestal ends at County Road 200, so we take CR 525 East to continue north. County Road 525 East will take you all the way to US 36, but I like to take a right at CR 100 South and head east over to CR 625 East. It is worth it just to drive under the bridge, and along the creek, great views. We took US 36 West back towards Danville, but turned of...

Fort Harrison Veterans Center Fundraiser

Image
Saturday, September 6, 2014 It wasn't a pretty day to be taking off for a ride, and while my favorite riding partner, Kasey, and I prepared to leave, we kept asking each other if we were going or not. It was kind of like the Poker Run from this year's Gathering of Eagles all over again. I wouldn't be posting here, if I didn't ride, so we did at least leave the house. With the clouds hanging over, it was also a cool morning, so we had the rain gear already on. We were on way to the former Fort Benjamin Harrison on the northeast side of Indianapolis. We arrived on the former base, and made our way around to the Veteran's Center, the target of the funds this ride was raising money for. Sitting in the rained soaked parking lot was about twenty-five motorcycles. Some were parked in spaces, others seemed kind of lined up, so we pulled into the line. A pair of motorcycles pulled in to line up in the row next to us. The air was wet, pretty much just a mist, one o...

GOE XVIII- Day Six: The Final Day, An Old Friend Returns

Saturday, June 28, 2014 The sun broke over the Rural King and poured through the crack in the curtain of the hotel room. It was time to start the finally leg of this year's journey. We had breakfast in the lobby of the Comfort Inn. The bikes were already fueled up, so we just needed to get them packed up, and our legs thrown over the seat. We started out on 95 heading west, with a short jaunt on 12 to get to 273. It wasn't long before we were taking a south loop around Indian Lake. It was still a bit early, and I could feel the cool air blowing off the water. The last section of the trip around the lake put us on 33, which we stayed on when we crossed Interstate 75. Wapakoneta sits just west of the Interstate, and now has a place in my heart. We pulled over in the town to take a break, but before we made it to the fuel stop, I had a Kodak Moment to capture. The Black Pearl had hit another milestone: 75,000 miles. We went into town, go gas, and continued on our journey. ...

GOE XVIII- Day Five: Heading Back Home

Friday, June 27th, 2014 Just as it is exciting to see the bikes roll in for Gathering of Eagles, it is sad to see them pull out and head for home. Lots of these people I won't see for another year in a different place. At the meeting we decided that location would be Lake George, New York. Before we pack up and mount up, we try to find everyone we can to say good bye to. Some we had wanted to see had left already, but we were able to talk to most of them. The skies looked calm and empty of rain, so it was going to be a good day to get some miles on the tires. The beginning of our route followed the Poker Run we had embarked on just two days earlier. I had thought the ride to the asylum was more enjoyable, but now as we ride through Wayne National Forest with only the dew lifting as the moisture in the air, I will change my mind. There wasn't anything about this stretch that I didn't like. The smooth pavement that rose and sank, switching back and forth, the lush tree ...
