Glow Necklaces! Two Dollars!

Saturday, September 2, 2006

Every year during Labor Day weekend, a local radio station sponsor a last blast of summer - a fireworks show downtown. One of the best viewing areas is the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens Parking Lot. Since Nina is an employee, the Indy Zoo takes advantage of a captures audience that will probably not be taking part of the zoo and gardens, and sells Glow in the Dark necklaces.

I need to mention that employees volunteer, and the zoo and garden do not get the money directly, as it goes toward animal conservation and wildlife protection.

Nina and I take the motorcycle, as it is easier to move around the traffic, and find a place to park the bike close to the entrance. Most of the ride would be my normal ride to work, as we cruised down Washington Street towards downtown. We would actually pass over the main north/south artery of Indianapolis, Meridian Street, and continue to the near west side. The first thing we pass under is the Indianapolis Arts Garden, a glass structure that tops the intersection of Washington and Illinois Street. I guess I have grown used to its high arching glass structure, as I pass under it without much recognition. Perhaps, I am paying more attention to the traffic and road conditions.

From the lights being on in Victory Field, it must be that the Indianapolis Indians are playing a baseball game. We round a corner past the Eiteljorg Native American Museum, cross the White River Bridge, and slow to a stop, as the traffic for the parking lot has backed up. Eventually, we get through, and just in the nick of time, as they were baricading the parking lot entrance right behind us.

It was a cool night, and it appeared that this year more people used the lot for parking, than for setting up viewing areas. Some people took it like tailgating, and had food, grills, games, even an RV was parked in the lot!

After walking the lot, and selling lots of glowing rings, we returned to the bike, needing to pack for the rest of the weekend. The firework show had begun, and we left the parking area with the sky lighting up, and filled with the thunderous booms.

We returned the way that we had came, but when we got to Shadeland Avenue, we took the ramp to head north to 10th Street. We need to hit the grocery store. I mentioned to Nina that we may need to ride around the block a little when we got near to home. I think for now, I will leave the reason in limbo, and make it so you will have to check tomorrow's post.
