GOE XIX, Day 1: There's Something in the Air

Friday, June 19th, 2015

There was something in air...moisture. Lots of moisture falling from the sky. So we were starting this journey to Gathering of Eagles, GOE, with lots of liquid sunshine falling from the sky. We were suited up, and started out heading north on State Road 39 towards Lebanon, Indiana.

In Lebanon we made our way east on State Road 32 to the town of Jolietville, and turned north on Mule Barn Road. The rain continued, not a hard rain, but it was steady, and soaking. We continued east on SR 47 until it turns into 236th Street into Strawtown, Indiana. We turned north on SR 37, and continued for a long distance.

Our first stop came just bit north of Elwood. Since I didn't start with a full tank, we fueled up, had some snacks and drinks, and then made our way back into the rain. Not sure if it was the break or not, but it felt like it was raining harder.

State Road 37 comes to end in Huntington, Indiana, so we took SR 9 north from there. Cambridge City would be our next stop. While the rain seemed to have let up, we were all soaked. I had a pretty good idea that my boots weren't going to hold out the water, but Kasey had bought "waterproof" boots in Costa Rica. Both of our feet were soaked. Funny thing, your socks at like a wick, and moisture rises up your leg into your pants. Rain pants or not, we were wet up to our knees.

The nest leg was east on US Highway 30 to make our way into Fort Wayne. Kasey was elected National Treasurer last year, and today were getting the papers signed to make it official. The banking for the club is done is Wells Fargo, and there are no branches in Central Indiana.

Coliseum Boulevard led us into Coldwater Road, both were pretty think with traffic. We made our way around, to the Wells Fargo Bank. We were about right on the time we wanted to arrive, but Chuck, the President was not there yet. He arrived in just a couple of minutes. The paperwork got completed, and we were back on our way. We had the hope that we were not going to be detoured by flooding water over the road.

We didn't have any worries on 469, the loop around Fort Wayne. In fact, the road and the air was dry, and the air flowing around us also made us drier. Just as we were about to exit the loop to Highway 30, the rain started falling again.

We were able to run all the way to Van Wert, Ohio on US 30. The hotel was only a short distance south on 127. Thank goodness. We made our way to the front desk, checked in, and then unpacked into the room.

Brent and Callie were already at the Mexican Restaurant across the street, so we got our selves reasonably presentable, and then walked over. The trip to the eatery and back was the driest part of the trip for the day. Dinner was awesome, too, great food, and great company, company we would see again in a few days.
