GOE XIX, Day 4: Used Meat and the Adirondacks

Time for the last leg of the journey to get to Lake George and Gathering of Eagles. The last 250 miles started near Rochester, and with a tour of the town. First off, I went to adjust something and hit the engine kill switch. It took a second to see what I did. Enough time for Kasey to remind me of my talk of retiring The Black Pearl and replacing her.

My brother, Kevin, was in the lead, and that lead started with a bit of a loop around the town of Irondequoit. We didn't got through the bad areas, at least. Finally we got back on State Road 104, and heading east.

The weather would be fairly clear, but we would still find lots of water, I guess it is just the way the trip is going to go. We were heading to Lake George, so I guess we were destined for the water. Near Hannibal we got onto SR 3, and then SR 49 to head east and down to Oneida Lake. Yep, more water.

A few more miles down the road and we pulled our two wheeled chariots into Rome, New York. I guess my brother had a place to eat picked out, but when we pulled up, we were told the place stopped selling food, just a bar now. A round the block we go, passed a "bar" that looked like someone's converted house. I remember that from college.

Eventually, and at the demand of my brother's riding partner and wife, Virginia, we pulled into a wood fired, brick oven pizza joint called DiCastro's. It looked great to me, and so we hopped of the bikes and stepped inside. It was fairly busy for a Monday, so that is always a good sign.

The place smelled good, and the menu had plenty of options we could enjoy, including a peculiar one we had to ask about. You see every item had a description along with it, but one. Just a price and a name: Used Meat Sandwich. The waitress approached, and was asked to explain. The story goes that the meat is Pork Tips, added into their Marinara Sauce to give it a meat flavor. They pull meat back out, and then use it with a little bit of sauce and mozzarella cheese and tasty bun to hold together.

Kasey and Virginia ordered, and offered up tastes to Kevin and I, and it was quite good. Might need to work on the title, but then is worked on them. I mean, the wait staff can be as much a sales person as a server. Plus, the woman told us that they always have a limited supply, so they don't over promote it.

So with our bellies full, we made our way out of town on SR 365 to SR 12, and then headed north. Back on 365 and into Adirondacks Park. Not knowing what all would be in the park, we fueled up with enough to get us to the host hotel. The thicker forest meant the ride was a bit cooler, but very much enjoyable.

At some point the road became SR 8, and we wound or way left and right, and up and down through the park. We turned on to SR 28, and we followed my brother's lead into the Lickety Split Ice Cream Shop. We got our sweet treats, and took a little walk across the street to use the restroom, non available at the little stand. A few bicyclists came along and we talked to them, They were riding across the country a few days at a time, and then stopping to build homes. We would see the rest of the team as we headed on the last segment of the trip.

After State Road 28, we got on SR 9 heading south, and that would take us along and through the town of Lake George. Kasey lived in the area, in Glens Falls, and was reminiscing along the route. She was amazed to see an arcade still opened.

We arrived at the host hotel, and we were not the last people there. We started this streak last year, by showing up early. We were about a third or halfway through the group arriving. We checked in, got our room, and started unpacking. Tomorrow the rally will start, registration and a ride on our own kicks things off.
