GOE XIX, Day 11: I Can Tell By the Weather - We Are Close to Home

Kasey's Birthday, Monday, June 29th, 2015

Our final day, the one that would carry us home, started out familiar in the that the air was cool, but the sun was actually shining. We grabbed some breakfast at the hotel, and then packed up to hit the road. We were making our way from north of Pittsburgh down to US 40, the National Road.

We would make our way to US 40 in Cambridge, Ohio. While waiting at a red light, I noticed a cafe and deli next to each other, and an empty parking space right out front. After getting my riding partner's approval, I backed the bike into the space, and we settled into Guernsey's Cafe for lunch.

Up until this point, we were dry, but the skies were turning more and more to Indiana skies as we sat and ate. The grayed up, and then started to let loose with some rain. Lunch was good, and it was time to hit the road, and the wet roads. Before we left town, and connected with US 40, we filled the tank.

The rain increased as we drove the 80 miles to get to Columbus, Ohio. Before approaching the major city, we switched up to Interstate 70, and made our way through the metropolis. After halfway through town, we were glad we heading west. The east bound lanes were backed up from accident.

We stopped for a gas stop on the other side of Columbus. We took a break, too, as we knew the rain was going the opposite direction, so we were hoping it would pass. Before we left, we rain into another motorcyclist heading into the city, We warned him to not take I-70.

We made our way back to US 40, and even though the weather hadn't changed, the road was more pleasant than the highway. Less traffic, and the occasional small town to give some excitement to our tired eyes.

We couldn't believe that as we approached Indiana, the skies actually started to clear, and the gray turned to blue. For most of our run on US 40, we basked in dry air. When we got to Greenfield, Indiana, we headed north on SR 9 to connect with I-70 once again. We took the highway through town. If you know the area, you know what I mean by the north split, but it is the north intersection of I-70 and I-65. That is where the odometer turned over 80,000 miles. We would proceed to the south split, continuing on I-70.

The interstate would be our dry run to Plainfield, where we headed north on 267. First thought, we stopped at Arby's to pick up some dinner. We had nothing to eat, and too tired to fix anything at home.

We took our back way home, Miles Drive, back across US 40 and then north on Cartersburg Road. Just about three miles from home, we hit the biggest storm we hit the whole trip. The rain came down hard, and Kasey huddled behind me protecting our dinner. The rain didn't last long, a mile or two of a very familiar road to me, and then stopped as fast as it started. We made it to the driveway, got the bike in the garage, and the rain started to fall once again.

So this GOE trip ended just as it started, with something in the air. We would be in for several more days of rain falling from the Indiana sky.
