Annual Ride to the River

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

The advantage of being your own boss is that you can take a day off, and the boss won't mind!! Today was one of those days. I had been doing a lot of work around the house, even over the weekend, and I plan on doing more tomorrow, on Independence Day.

There is a bit of history with this Run to the River! I have been on a similiar ride years ago, with many of the same people. It was the Sunday Morning Breakfast Group, but they had not settle on a regular place, and they were meeting on Saturday's. The day I took this ride previously, they were meeting at an Old Country Buffet near my house. Since then, there has been a Run to the River, led by Wild Bill, every year since.

So in the great tradition, I took off, heading east on Washington Street until turning south on Franklin Road. At US 52, I went south and east to Post Road. We were meeting at a McDonald's near where Post Road crosses I 74. I rolled my bike into the parking lot, and lined up next to the other bikes. I stepped inside, and met with the group of five other riders.

Our first leg would be on the super slab known as I 74. If you live in Indy, you have probably traveled this road a lot to get to King's Island. We rambled along the asphalt until we got to Greensburg, Indiana. We took 421 down to Versailles, Indiana, and a potty and gas stop. I was riding with older men, so frequent potty breaks would be the order of the day.

We took SR 129 out of town after the brief stop, and traveled until we came upon SR 62, south of Cross Planes, Indiana. The road began to twist through the hilly southern Indiana landscape. Finally, some turns after all that Interstate!!

Sr 62 took us back to 421, which led us into the river town of Madison, Indiana. Things were getting geared up for the annual Regatta. It occurs every year around the Fourth of July.

We selected a place along the river to eat. Apparently he cook is having a competition with the river to see who can be lazier. It took quite a while to get our food, despite the good waitress we had on her first day!!

We pulled out of Madison on SR 56, heading east along the Ohio River. Reminded me of cruising along the river two weeks ago, but I was about 400 miles up stream then! I wondered how fast the water moves, and if the water I saw in Wheeling had made it to the Mississippi, or even out to the ocean?

Along SR 56, we came to a stop, behind a long line of traffic. After a few minutes, we took off again, but none of us saw anything to stop for? In the town of Vevay we pulled into a gas station. I pulled into a shady spot, and behind a Honda Valkyrie. The first thing the couple asked was whether we had gotten caught in the traffic from the accident. The gave the details they has seen, as it appeared to them that someone had rolled off the road, as the car was damaged all over.

SR 56 took us past two of Indiana's Riverboat Casino's, the second was in Rising Sun, where we would take a turn onto SR 262. It was a ribbon of road, winding its way around trees and hills.

We rejoined US 50, and then took 129 north. Apparently a section south of here is very curvy, but someone has had the bright idea to straighten out SR 129 to the river! If I ever get a hold of the person who came up with that idea!!

129 lead us north to SR 48, which we took west back to 421. After a gas and Dairy Queen Stop, we returned to I 74, and sped our way back to Indianapolis.
