Red River Gorge, Day 2: More on Foot than Wheels

Sunday, September 30, 2007

Another lazy morning, after all, this a weekend vacation. We packed up what we thought we needed on the bike, and rode a short travel to Rose's Cafe. There are slim pickings when it comes to dining. We met a couple there, each on there on bikes, and had nice conversation with them as we ate.

We started out back in Slade, looking for information. With knowledge in our head, we made our way to Nada, Kentucky. After two miles on SR-77, we came upon the Nada Tunnel. It was morning, and the east side was quite dark still, so I thought we would ride through, and take pictures on the other side. Well, the other side had parking areas headed downhill, not good for a bike and a kickstand!

We continued along the wonderful scenic and curvy roads through the park. Nina had not said anything about where she wanted to go, so I pulled off a gravel road to a trail head. We got our bearing, and then headed for the Park Office.

Most of the roads to anything other than the Skyway Bridge they have were gravel. We headed back down the road to find the suspension bridge. Here is a shot of the bike parked.

Then we headed down the suspension bridge.

We rode around Red River a bit more, and upon our exit, we noticed a nice looking building at corner. It looked like a place to eat, so we made a u-turn, and headed back for it. The food was World Class, as often described by the menus and signs on the on the wall. It was very tasty, and would serve to keep us going through the rest of the day at Natural Bridge.

We pulled into the park, and headed down to the Sky Lift parking lot. We had a plan to ride up, and hike down. We thought it would be easier, but it would still be quite a trek. We rode up the lift, and after a little confusion, we crossed the Natural Bridge.

After we returned past the Sky Lift we began our trek down the hill. First stop was a look out that shows the Natural Bridge.

Then it was a short stretch to Lover's Leap. Then it was a long, wooded hike down the side of the mountain. At some point was very dark back in the woods, but by the time we exited, we were basking in sunlight.

On our way back the room, we stopped at Rose's for dinner, but had to carry out what we didn't eat while were waiting for food. They were able to make desert first.

We retired into our original room, and then moved when one with working satelite television became available.
